Springfield Summer Classes Open For Kids: Acting, Writing, Reading Enrichment

Classes range from phonics for early readers to creative writing and performance workshops for teens, starting as early as June 8.

SPRINGFIELD, NJ — Registration is open for summer enrichment classes in acting, writing, and reading at the Chisholm Community Center in Springfield, offered through a partnership between Party Maniacs of New Jersey and the Springfield Recreation Department.

Acting

Acting classes are open to children ages 9-14 and run Mondays, June 22 through July 27, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. The cost is $180 per child.

Students will learn performance techniques through games and acting exercises, working toward "an audition-ready monologue in a fun and encouraging setting." The session concludes with a showcase for family and friends.

Writing

Writing classes are offered in two age groups, both running 6 to 7 p.m. and costing $180 per child.

Students ages 9-14 meet Tuesdays, June 23 through July 28. The class is led by a writing student at Hofstra University and focuses on grammar, description writing, and original short story creation, offering "a fun outlet for creative students to blossom and test their writing abilities without the pressure of a grade."

Students ages 14-18 meet Thursdays, June 25 through July 30. The class focuses on storytelling, voice, and creative analysis of books and films, and is described as particularly useful "ahead of writing a college entry essay."

Reading Enrichment

Rising kindergarten through second-grade students may choose from two Reading Enrichment sessions. Groups are capped at four children and taught by a certified teacher. Coursework covers phonics, sight words, reading fluency, and independent reading skills.

Session 1 runs Mondays, June 8 through July 6, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., at a cost of $190. Session 2 runs Thursdays, July 9 through July 30, from 3 to 4 p.m., at a cost of $150.
