Army Veteran Promoted to Sergeant In Summit

SUMMIT, NJ — A Summit police officer who served in Afghanistan with the U.S. Army has been promoted to sergeant.

Mayor Elizabeth Fagan recently swore in Michael Alesandro during a ceremony recognizing his military and law enforcement service.

Before joining the Summit Police Department in 2017, Alesandro served with the Army’s 10th Mountain Division and deployed to Afghanistan’s Logar Province in 2015, where he worked as a team leader during combat operations.

During his military service, he earned several honors, including the Army Commendation Medal and the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, before being honorably discharged in 2016.

Since joining Summit police, Alesandro has worked in the Patrol Bureau, helped train new officers, and became one of the department’s lead active shooter response instructors.

He has also received multiple commendations during his time with the department, including life-saving awards, exceptional duty awards, and a meritorious service award.
