Avoid Non-Essential Travel On These Dates, Summit Officials Say

SUMMIT, NJ — Summit officials are urging residents to avoid non-essential travel on NJ Transit during several upcoming FIFA World Cup game days this summer, citing expected heavy congestion across the rail system.

According to a travel advisory shared by the city, the World Cup matches at MetLife Stadium are expected to draw thousands of attendees throughout June and July 2026. With no onsite parking available at the stadium, officials say all attendees will be relying on public transportation to get to and from games.

That, in turn, is expected to put significant strain on NJ Transit lines and stations throughout the region, including in Summit. The advisory notes that crowding and delays could begin several hours before each game and continue for hours afterward.

Residents are specifically being asked to avoid non-essential travel on NJ Transit on the following dates: June 13, 16, 22, 25, 27, and 30, as well as July 5 and July 19.

City officials also suggest that residents who are able to work remotely consider doing so on those days to avoid peak travel disruptions. Those who do need to use NJ Transit are being advised to allow extra travel time and plan for possible delays.
