Man Arrested For Breaking Into Shop, Stealing $5K E-Bike In Summit

SUMMIT, NJ — A Philadelphia man was arrested for breaking into a shop and stealing an E-bike worth around $5,000 n=in Summit.

On Friday, just after 3 a.m., Summit patrol officers went to a business on the 300 block of Springfield Avenue for a report of an activated commercial burglar alarm.

Officers found the front door of the business to be open with shattered glass on the ground. The burglary alarm was also sounding, according to police.

On the business surveillance footage, police reportedly saw that the perpetrator first arrived at around 2:32 a.m., where he can be seen looking into the store from outside of the business.

In the video, the suspect was seen riding onto Glenwood Place on a 2026 black Trek FX+1S, previously stolen out of Pennsylvania, said police.

The perpetrator then came back at around 2:57 a.m. on foot and broke the front glass door with a sledgehammer, said police.

The suspect can then be seen on video taking a light blue Specialized Vado 5.0 bicycle, valued at $4,999.99, and riding toward Springfield Avenue, said police.

Over the course of the next 27-plus hours, Summit Police Detectives worked around the clock to get tangible evidence and camera footage, conduct surveillance, and pursue leads in multiple jurisdictions, including Pennsylvania, according to Summit officials.

On Saturday at 6:22 a.m., Joseph Holman, 46, from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was arrested.

Holman, who resisted officers during the arrest process, was charged with the following:

• Burglary
• Theft by Unlawful Taking
• Unlawful Possession of a Weapon
• Resisting Arrest
• Hinder Prosecution
• Burglar Tools
• Receiving Stolen Property
• Weapon Possession for Unlawful Purpose
• Certain Persons Not to Have Weapons
• Criminal Mischief

Holman also had two active NCIC warrants, one of which was for escaping custody.

He was taken to Essex County Jail, where he will be remanded until his detention hearing.
