Harnois takes over as chief as three other department members are recognized.

SUMMIT, NJ — The Summit Fire Department has a new leader.

Brian Harnois was sworn in as Summit’s new fire chief during Tuesday night’s Common Council meeting, officially taking over the department after the retirement of former Chief Eric Evers.

Harnois, a longtime member of the Summit Fire Department, began his service as a volunteer firefighter and part-time dispatcher before joining the department as a career firefighter in 2007. He previously served as lieutenant beginning in 2015 and was promoted to battalion chief in 2024.

Harnois succeeds Evers, who retired July 2 after 38 years of service with the City of Summit.

Mayor Elizabeth Fagan congratulated Harnois on his promotion, citing his experience and background with the department.

“His passion for the fire service and serving the community will greatly benefit our residents,” Fagan said.

Harnois also recognized the work of his predecessor and Deputy Chief Imbimbo as he begins leading the department.

“I would also like to express my gratitude to Chief Evers and Deputy Chief Imbimbo for their support and their leadership,” Harnois said. “As Chief Evers retires, I look forward to building on his legacy as we continue to serve our residents with pride, professionalism, and integrity.”

The meeting also included the swearing-in of three other department members.

Matthew Lemons was promoted from lieutenant to battalion chief, James Hintze was promoted from firefighter to lieutenant, and Christopher Jackson was hired into the department’s career division as a probationary firefighter after previously serving as a volunteer firefighter.

Family members, friends, and current and former members of the fire department attended the ceremony to recognize the promotions and new appointment.

The department congratulated the newly sworn-in members and thanked them for their continued service to the Summit community.
