Police Calls Up 2.5% in 2010

Police calls in 2010 were up almost 2.5 percent over 2009, but were down in December 2010 compared to December 2009.

Of the 23,418 calls for service in 2010, 1,795 of them were criminal, down 9.7 percent from 1,988 criminal calls for service in 2009.

The number of calls relating to general incidents and calls for escorts were both up. Police receieved 21,389 incdient related calls in 2010, up 3.4 percent from 20,653 calls in 2009. Calls for escorts were up 3,4 percent, or eight calls in 2010.

The responded to 9.4 percent more accidents involving injuries and had 50 percent more fatal accidents after only one in 2009 with the death of Carlyse Kennedy in September.

The number of accidents involving driving while intoxicated arrests also rose 28.6 percent in 2010.

What was done in 2010 were the number of tickets issues for moving violations, down 5.7 percent, and the number of parking tickets, down 11.3 percent.

Both the number of petty and grand larcenies were also down in 2010, as well as the number of robberies and disorderly persons. However, there was one more auto theft in 2010 than in 2009, the number of assaults was flat at 56 each year and the number of breaking and entering calls is up 8 percent in 2010.

Police made three arrests on homicide charges in 2010, both related to the death of Abelino Mazariego on July. There were no arrests for manslaughter of forcible rape in 2010.

The number of total arrests in 2010 is down 8.6 percent, or 36 arrests, in 2010. These include one arrest for "prostitution and commercial vice," nine arrests for "weapons possession," nine for "forgery and/or counterfeiting," and 18 for disorderly conduct.
