Teaneck Bird Band-A-Thon Offers Close-Up Look At Fall Migration

Teaneck Creek Conservancy is inviting visitors to observe how birds are studied during fall migration.

TEANECK, NJ — Early birds can head to Teaneck Creek Conservancy Saturday for a firsthand look at how birds are studied during fall migration.

The Bird Band-a-thon at the Creek begins at 7:30 a.m. at Teaneck Creek Conservancy, 20 Puffin Way.

According to Teaneck Creek Conservancy’s website, bird banding is a tool scientists use to study birds by temporarily capturing them in specially designed nets and collecting information such as their species, sex and weight. Each bird also receives a metal identification band with a unique number that is reported to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Teaneck Creek Conservancy has conducted bird banding since 2023 to study the bird community following restoration and is expanding the effort into migration banding this fall.

“This year we're monitoring which birds are stopping to refuel and rest up as they make their way south for winter,” Teaneck Creek Conservancy said.
