Friends of Rahway River Parkway Launches 11th Annual Photography Contest

CRANFORD— The Friends of Rahway River Parkway (FORRP) is inviting photographers of all ages and experience levels to discover, explore, and celebrate one of Union County's greatest natural treasures as it officially launches the 11th Annual Rahway River Parkway Photography Contest.

For more than a decade, the annual contest has inspired photographers of all ages and experience levels to slow down, venture into the Parkway's 15 parks, and capture the breathtaking landscapes, remarkable wildlife, and fun moments that make the Rahway River Parkway a treasured community resource. During all this time, participants have submitted more than 1,000 photographs, creating an extraordinary visual archive that celebrates the Parkway's beauty throughout every season and fosters a deeper appreciation for one of Union County's most cherished public landscapes.

The contest is open now and will accept submissions through Saturday, September 12, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. EST.

"This contest has become so much more than a photography competition," said FORRP member, "Every year, we see the parks through fresh eyes. Participants discover hidden corners, encounter incredible wildlife, and capture moments that remind all of us why these historic parks are worth protecting. The photographs tell the story of a living landscape that belongs to everyone, and we are excited to welcome both returning photographers and first-time participants for our eleventh year."

Photographers may submit up to three photographs in the following categories:

• Landscape
• Wildlife
• Recreation

Winning images will be featured in the 2027 Rahway River Parkway Calendar, an annual publication that celebrates the Parkway's natural beauty while supporting the Friends' mission to preserve, protect, and promote this historic Olmsted-inspired landscape.

Over the years, many participants have discovered that the contest has changed how they experience the parks along the Rahway River Parkway.

Photographer David Williams, a longtime participant, said the contest opened his eyes to the remarkable scope and beauty of the Parkway.

"When I first started entering the contest nearly ten years ago, I had no idea how extensive the Rahway River Parkway really was. I don't think many people in Union County realize just how special our local parks are. I hope my photographs help raise awareness of the Parkway's natural beauty and inspire others to appreciate and help preserve these remarkable green spaces."

For photographer Jessica Kirste, the Parkway evolved from a familiar place close to home into a source of continual insight.

"As I continued photographing the Parkway, my connection to it deepened. It evolved from being a familiar place to walk into a place I truly appreciate, observe, and feel protective of. Every year I discover something new, and that ongoing sense of wonder continues to inspire me."

Past participant Anny Goldman says the contest has become a meaningful way to preserve memories while strengthening her appreciation for the parks.

"After years of submitting my amateur photographs, I find myself proud as I reflect on all the memories I've shared with these trees, year after year, and with my family."

The Friends of Rahway River Parkway hopes this year's contest will motivate even more residents and visitors to step outside, experience the parks of the Rahway River Parkway from a new perspective, and share the beauty they discover along the way.

To participate, photographers are encouraged to visit any park within the Rahway River Parkway, capture original images, and submit up to three photographs using the online entry form. Each submission must be in horizontal orientation, at least 2 MB in size, and include the location where the photograph was taken.
