Tractor-Trailer Fire Closes N.J. Turnpike Lanes During Morning Commute, Officials Say

The crash closed northbound lanes near Exit 12 in Carteret during the Thursday morning commute.

UNION COUNTY, NJ — A tractor-trailer that burst into flames after a crash on the northbound New Jersey Turnpike caused major delays for morning commuters in Carteret on Thursday, according to state transportation officials.

As of about 6:45 a.m., all northbound lanes near Exit 12 remained closed, according to 511nj.org, the state Department of Transportation’s traffic website.

Traffic camera footage showed heavy congestion stretching back along the Turnpike as vehicles were brought to a crawl.

State Police did not immediately release additional information about the crash.

Officials said another truck fire in Somerset County was also affecting traffic Thursday morning.

That fire occurred on Interstate 287 south in Franklin near Exit 12 and blocked a lane, according to 511nj.org.

No additional details were immediately available for either incident.
