NJ Festival Orchestra Hosts “Music for a Matador” Fundraising Gala

Westfield, NJ — The New Jersey Festival Orchestra (NJFO) invites patrons and music lovers to an unforgettable evening of music and celebration at its annual fundraising gala, Music for a Matador, on Friday, April 10, 2026, from 6:00–10:00 PM at The Gran Centurions in Clark, New Jersey.

The elegant evening will feature a beautifully prepared dinner, lively conversation, and exciting live and silent auctions, bringing together supporters of the arts for a night of celebration and philanthropy. The gala will also include a special concert presentation inspired by the passion and drama of Georges Bizet’s beloved opera Carmen, narrated by NJFO Music Director David Wroe and performed by NJFO musicians alongside distinguished guest artists.

“Opera has an extraordinary way of bringing music, drama, and storytelling together,” said Wroe. “With Music for a Matador, we are excited to share the thrilling spirit of Carmen while bringing our community together to support the orchestra’s artistic and educational mission.”

The performance will feature Lisa Marie Rogali in the title role of Carmen. Rogali has been praised for her “warm, nuanced voice” and captivating stage presence, with recent appearances including Carmen with Virginia Opera and Florentine Opera and performances with Toledo Opera and Gulfshore Opera.

Tenor Dane Suarez appears as Don José. Known for his “big, heroic voice” and emotionally powerful performances, Suarez has performed with companies including Wexford Festival Opera, Opera Memphis, and Opera Southwest, and has appeared in concert with The Phoenix Symphony and Erie Philharmonic.

Romanian-American soprano Sara LeMesh performs the role of Micaëla. Acclaimed for her “lush tone” and dramatic versatility, LeMesh has appeared with Annapolis Opera, Opera North, and The Florentine Opera, and has been featured as a soloist with orchestras including the Buffalo Philharmonic.

Baritone Seung Hyeon Baek portrays Escamillo, the charismatic bullfighter. Baek, praised for his rich baritone and commanding stage presence, has appeared with the Metropolitan Opera and companies including Opera Orlando, the Canadian Opera Company, and New Orleans Opera.

The evening will also honor David Badertscher, a dedicated supporter of the arts and longtime advocate for NJFO. Badertscher serves on the boards of the New Jersey Festival Orchestra and the Light Opera of New Jersey and previously served on the Board of Directors of the Fellowship Life Foundation. In 2024, he received a special award from Bernards Township recognizing his outstanding service to the township and the State of New Jersey.

Proceeds from the gala support NJFO’s concerts, education programs, and community outreach initiatives, including Listening is Healing, which brings live music to healthcare and community spaces across New Jersey.
