Westfield Mayor Addresses Stop & Shop Closure, Future Of Store Site

WESTFIELD, NJ — Following the news of the closure of Westfield's Stop & Shop this fall, Mayor Jeremy Berman shared an update on the future of the property.

"This store has been an important part of our community for many years, and we recognize that this announcement is concerning for both its employees and the residents who rely on it," said Berman.

Berman also addressed questions about what could happen next at the property.

The site is privately owned, and the town does not have a role in determining its future use.

The property was sold in the first quarter of this year, Berman said.

Since the sale, Berman said there have been several "productive" conversations with the new owners.

"Historically, the new owners have been recognized for acquiring, repositioning, and re-tenanting commercial properties — not as residential developers. We expect they will pursue a similar approach with this property, said Berman.

Daniel Wolk, a spokesman with Stop &Shop, told Patch "Stop & Shop has made the difficult decision to close our store located at 219 Elm Street, in Westfield, New Jersey, after a routine evaluation of our store operations."

Wolk said that Stop & Shop intends to operate the store through the early fall of 2026.

All associates will be allowed to transfer to other Stop & Shop locations.

The town said it will remain in contact with the property owners and provide updates when more information becomes available.
