“During the incident, the responding firefighters quickly recognized the signs of a stroke and provided the critical care needed to ensure the patient received timely medical treatment. According to the Cooperman Barnabas neurology team, the rapid response, professionalism and exceptional care provided by the West Orange firefighters played a vital role in the patient’s recovery. As a result, the patient was able to leave the hospital just three days later and since has made a full recovery.”

The following West Orange firefighters were recognized for their efforts: Capt. Brendan Curry, Capt. William Kelly, and firefighters Rich Paris, John Dillon, and Mike Reilly.

“The department is proud of the dedication and professionalism demonstrated by these firefighters and is grateful for the strong partnership shared with the medical professionals at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center,” township officials said in a news release.

“This recognition serves as a reminder of the important role first responders and health care providers play in working together to protect the health and safety of the community,” the township stated. “It underscores the importance of how teamwork can make the difference when seconds count between tragedy and recovery.”

NEW FIREFIGHTERS, PROMOTIONS

A promotional ceremony and oath-taking event was held for several West Orange firefighters at the town council meeting on Wednesday – including the town’s new fire chief.

Acting Fire Chief Nicholas Gillo was officially promoted to the rank of fire chief. Gillo takes over for Anthony Vecchio, who recently retired after 25 years of service.

Capt. John Casiero was promoted to the rank of deputy fire chief.

Meanwhile, five new firefighters took their oaths of office after completing 13 weeks of training at the academy: Antonio Cilenti, Callens Desrameaux, Steven McMickle, Tristan Olaechea, and Justin Voss.

The emergency responders will now begin their service with the West Orange Fire Department as probationary firefighters while completing an additional two months of emergency medical technician (EMT) training.

Mayor Susan McCartney administered the oaths of office at Wednesday’s ceremony.
