Dogs In Crates Died Of Starvation Inside Woodbridge Home, Police Say

WOODBRIDGE, NJ — Woodbridge Police say they plan to arrest a homeowner who appears to have left town, leaving pets inside her home to die of starvation.

Woodbridge Police were called to a home on Douglas Street Wednesday night for a welfare check of a resident, said the town's chief law enforcement officer, Brian Murphy.

He said officers were met with a foul order when they entered the home, and found the interior of the house in unsanitary conditions.

Inside the home, police found a horror: Numerous dogs kept in crates, plus hamsters and lizards in crates, all dead.

Neighbors on the block say the pets all died from starvation. The homeowner, a woman, was nowhere to be found.

The Middlesex County Haz-Mat unit, plus firefighters, were called in to remove the dead animals. The Office of Emergency Management also responded.

Woodbridge Animal Control removed the deceased animals. Criminal charges are pending against the Woodbridge homeowner, said Murphy. Woodbridge Police did not release her name, nor the charges.
