WOODBRIDGE, NJ — Woodbridge's new affordable housing apartment building for the homeless opened last month, and tenants have been moving in.

It's run by the Raritan Bay Area YMCA, which announced it opened in this Sept. 11 press release.

The apartment building has 28 units, with 40 beds total, so some residents will share an apartment. Each unit has its own kitchen. The apartments are intended for people who need housing, such as the homeless, or people just released from Raritan Bay Medical Center and have nowhere else to go. There will also be apartments set aside for emergency homeless situations, such as people who need immediate housing after a fire or a flood. People fleeing domestic violence situations can also be housed there.
The Raritan Bay Area YMCA said the opening of Sunrise Village "represents another step forward in (their) broader efforts to prevent and end homelessness."

"Sunrise Village is a fully affordable and supportive housing community designed to meet residents where they are," said the YMCA. "In addition to housing, tenants will have access to the YMCA’s network of supportive and wraparound services focused on long-term stability, health and overall well-being."
The building was originally built by local real estate developer Ralph Mocci, who originally intended it to be market-rate apartment rentals. But those plans never came to fruition and the building was purchased by Raritan Bay Area YMCA, Woodbridge Township, the city of Perth Amboy, Middlesex County and the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs and turned into homeless housing.
"Whether they're Woodbridge or Perth Amboy residents, again, it's unfathomable to think we will have space that's not filled by people who need the housing right away," Woodbridge Mayor John McCormac said previously, saying he expects the building will be filled to occupancy.
“We are proud to partner with the YMCA and our fellow government and community partners to help make Sunrise Village a reality and expand housing opportunities for those who need them most," said McCormac.
“A safe, stable home changes what is possible for an individual or family,” said Perth Amboy Mayor Helmin Caba. “Sunrise Village turns partnership into results by providing affordable homes, supportive services and a clear path toward long-term stability. Perth Amboy is proud to support the Raritan Bay Area YMCA and the partners who made this community possible.”
