 What is Circle Singing?
Circle Singing is community-created improvisational vocal music. Some people describe it as a “drum circle for singers.” It is both a contemporary and ancestral practice of making music together in the moment, using only our voices and bodies as instruments.
Through call-and-response, vocal and body percussion, syncopated rhythms, invented languages, melodies, harmonies, playful sounds, and spontaneous vocal expression, participants co-create music in real time. Circle Singing invites singers to explore, listen, respond, and discover what can happen when music is made collaboratively and without judgment.
In collaboration with&nbsp;Improv NM, facilitator&nbsp;Kathryn (Katy) Holtkamp&nbsp;will lead an introductory exploration of Circle Singing this spring.
Katy is a New Mexico native and New York–trained professional singer and actress who has performed and trained in multiple musical genres around the world. She is currently performing on tour with&nbsp;Cirque du Soleil’s KOOZA&nbsp;and is offering this workshop to her home community during a break between touring cities.
Having experienced firsthand how improvisational play can free the voice and allow music to emerge more effortlessly, Katy is passionate about creating spaces where singers can discover what their voices are truly capable of.
