Video: West Babylon Apartment Fire Draws Massive Mutual Aid Response; Residents Displaced

Crews responded to a 7:29 p.m. structure fire at Fairfield Suburbia Gardens on Great East Neck Road, officials say.

WEST BABYLON, NY — A firefighter was injured and five apartment units were impacted Sunday night during a working fire at a West Babylon garden-style apartment complex, officials said.

The West Babylon Fire Department was activated for a structure fire at 7:29 p.m. at Fairfield Suburbia Gardens, located at 395 Great East Neck Road. A Signal 13 was declared.

First-arriving chiefs confirmed a working fire in the rear portion of one of the complex’s three buildings and requested mutual aid to the scene, officials said.

Access to the fire building was initially limited due to snow, ice, and vehicles in the parking lot, slowing apparatus placement as crews stretched hand lines to the structure.

As firefighters advanced interior lines, Suffolk County police officers went door-to-door removing tenants from the building, officials said. Additional crews made an interior push while engines operated from both sides of the complex to reach the fire.

The Town of Babylon Fire Marshal’s Office and arson investigators were requested to the scene.

A firefighter was injured during operations. Officials did not immediately release the severity of the injury. All tenants were removed from the affected building, and the fire was brought under control in about an hour. Five units were impacted.

West Babylon responded with four engines, two trucks, EMS chiefs, and fire police. Mutual aid companies included Babylon Ladder, North Babylon Engine, West Islip Ladder, Lindenhurst Ladder and Engine, North Lindenhurst Ladder and EMS, East Farmingdale Heavy Rescue and Suffolk County FRES with MERV1.

In total, more than 100 firefighters from 13 departments responded, officials said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
