Bay Shore Man Accused Of Hitting Dog With Stick: SPCA

BAY SHORE, NY — A Bay Shore man was charged with animal cruelty after he struck a dog with a stick and tethered the animal with too short a lead, the Suffolk County SPCA said.

Dashawn Moore, 33, was charged with one misdemeanor count of animal cruelty under New York State Agriculture and Markets Law and one misdemeanor count of insufficient tether length under the Suffolk County Code, SPCA Chief Roy Gross said.

The charges stem from an incident in March, when officials say that Moore, “for no justifiable reason,” struck his 1-year-old male pit bull mix, Knox, with a stick, causing the dog to yelp and yowl, officials said.

The SPCA said Moore also secured Knox to a railing with a tether that was less than 15 feet long.

SPCA detectives issued Moore a Field Appearance Ticket on June 17. He is scheduled to be arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip on July 7.
