Brentwood Students Inspired By Interactive Black History Month Performance

Jamel Hudson, Ph.D., used music and storytelling to engage Laurel Park Elementary students.

BRENTWOOD, NY — Students at Laurel Park Elementary were recently swept into the rhythms and stories of Black history during a lively and interactive Black History Month celebration.

The Brentwood school welcomed Jamel Hudson, Ph.D., a lecturer at Baruch College and Long Island advocate, who transformed the gymnasium into a vibrant classroom where music became a powerful teaching tool.

Through soulful renditions of “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” as well as classics by Marvin Gaye and Bob Marley, Hudson guided students through the cultural and historical significance behind the songs. His performance blended storytelling, history and live music, encouraging students to actively participate.
