Free Health Fair To Offer Screenings, Food, Haircuts In Central Islip

CENTRAL ISLIP, NY — Free health screenings, meals, haircuts, food distribution, and backpacks will be available at a community health fair on Saturday at Central Islip High School.

Stand Up To Poverty and the NAACP Islip-Smithtown Branch will host the event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 12 in collaboration with the Central Islip School District and the Suffolk County Department of Health Services' Office of Minority Health.

Organizers said no insurance is required.

Residents will be able to receive free screenings and consultations covering general health, mental health, women's health, vision care, pediatric care and physical therapy.

“Access to preventive healthcare can change, and sometimes save, a life,” said Astrid Fidelia, co-founder and CEO of Stand Up To Poverty. “By bringing medical professionals, community organizations and local partners together in one welcoming space, we are helping families receive care, information and resources without cost being a barrier.”

The fair will also include dental services, fresh produce, children's activities and face-painting, organizers said.

Pollo Campero will provide free food, while Immortal Barbershop will offer complimentary haircuts. Persaud Community Pantry and Long Island Cares will support a food distribution, and free backpacks provided by Style Saves will be available while supplies last.

Barbara Raymond-Obas, third vice president of the NAACP Islip-Smithtown Branch, said the event aims to address barriers that can prevent families from receiving health care and other services.

“We invite individuals and families to come out, take charge of their health, connect with valuable community resources, and join us as we Stand Up to Poverty—because healthier communities are stronger communities,” Raymond-Obas said.

Pamphile Financial is providing financial sponsorship for the event, while Kwizine Art will provide lunch for health care professionals, volunteers and community partners.

Local leaders and legislators are also expected to attend, according to organizers, with a short address scheduled for noon.

All services and giveaways are free and will be available while supplies and appointment capacity last.
