Community Chalk Mural Invites Bronx Residents to Create Together
Bronx and uptown residents, artists, families & volunteers invited to a community chalk mural at Dyckman Rest Stop, Aug 8 & 15, 10am–2pm.

Dates: Saturday, August 8 and Saturday, August 15
Time: 10 AM to 2 PM
Location: Dyckman Rest Stop, Washington Heights
Cost: Public and donation-based
Experience: No previous art experience required
Ages: All ages are welcome
The project is presented by The Art Meetup in partnership with NYC DOT Open Streets. Although the mural is taking place in Washington Heights, Bronx residents and artists are especially invited to participate, introduce themselves, and connect with the growing Art Meetup community.
The activity is designed as a casual, public art experience. Participants may arrive at any point between 10 AM and 2 PM, choose a section of the street, grab some chalk, and add to the larger community mural.

There is no formal art lesson or expectation that participants create professional work. People may draw independently, create alongside friends or family, collaborate with neighbors, or simply observe and meet members of the community.
Chalk and basic materials will be available while supplies last. Participants are also welcome to bring their own chalk or art materials that are appropriate for use on the street.

Visitors may:
• Add a drawing, message, pattern, or design to the mural
• Meet local artists, neighbors, and other creative people
• Volunteer with welcoming participants or organizing supplies
• Speak with The Art Meetup team about future community activities
• Stop by briefly or stay for a longer portion of the event
The event is open to all ages, with a particular focus on building more accessible spaces where adults can make art, meet new people, develop friendships, and participate in community life without needing to be professional artists.
This is an outdoor, public street activation. Attendees should dress for the weather, wear comfortable clothing, and expect to sit, stand, bend, or draw close to the ground while participating.
The event is public and donation-based. There is no required fee or donation to attend, draw, volunteer, or observe.
Optional donations help cover:
• Local artist and welcome assistant pay
• Chalk and participant supplies
• Water
• Signage and wayfinding
• Cleaning supplies
• Materials needed to safely organize both mural dates
Participation is not dependent on making a donation. Those who are able to contribute help The Art Meetup keep the activity accessible while supporting more public art opportunities for local artists and community members.
