Dog Found Severely Underweight, Locked In Basement On Long Island: SPCA

WHEATLEY HEIGHTS, NY — A Wheatley Heights man has been charged with animal cruelty after investigators discovered his dog severely underweight and suffering from multiple medical conditions, the Suffolk County SPCA said.

Isaiah Thomas, 20, was charged with two misdemeanors following an investigation into the alleged neglect of his 4-year-old male Cane Corso, Apollo, according to Suffolk County SPCA Chief Roy Gross.

Investigators determined that Thomas failed to provide Apollo with adequate veterinary care in September 2026, leaving the dog severely underweight with a body condition score of 2 out of 9, authorities said.

Apollo was also found suffering from a flea infestation, excoriations, wounds, severe generalized muscle loss and widespread skin disease accompanied by hair loss, crusting and scabbing, according to the SPCA.

Investigators further determined that Thomas failed to provide the dog with an adequate supply of wholesome food and water while keeping him confined to a basement, authorities said.

The SPCA said the basement was secured by a metal door held closed by three vehicle tires. Investigators said the conditions and lack of adequate nutrition resulted in Apollo suffering severe weight loss.

Apollo is currently receiving medical treatment at a local animal shelter.

SPCA detectives issued Thomas a field appearance ticket on Sept. 15 charging him with one misdemeanor count of failure to provide necessary veterinary care and one misdemeanor count of failure to provide proper food and drink to an impounded animal under New York State Agriculture and Markets Law.

Thomas is scheduled to be arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip on Oct. 5.
