East Islip Students Turn PE Class Into The Winter Olympics

Torch relay, curling, and ski jumping activities bring the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Games into the Timber Point gym.

EAST ISLIP, NY — During the first week of the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games, students at Timber Point Elementary School brought the excitement of international competition into their own gymnasium.

The celebration began with a schoolwide torch relay, setting the tone for a week filled with Olympic-themed physical education activities.

Students rotated through stations featuring hockey drills, speed and figure skating-inspired exercises, snowboarding simulations, ski jumping challenges and a creative adaptation of curling. Along the way, they learned about the history and traditions of the Olympic Games.

Classes also tuned in to watch Team USA and athletes from around the world compete, drawing inspiration from their performances and embracing the Olympic values of perseverance, teamwork and striving to achieve their personal best.

“Gold medals for everyone,” teacher Diane Wahrenburg said.
