EMFD Fire Commissioner Offer Helpful Safety Tips to Enjoy a Safe Summer

With summer in full swing, the Board of Fire Commissioners of the East Meadow Fire District reminds residents to be mindful of fire prevention, water, and bicycling/skateboarding safety measures during the warmer months when fire-related and other emergencies typically increase. Whether it’s enjoying the backyard barbecue or having fun cooling off in a swimming pool, engaging in boating, bicycling and other activities, the Fire Commissioners want everyone to be safe this summer and offer the following tips for staying safe:

• Use propane and charcoal grills outdoors only. Indoor use can cause deadly carbon monoxide poisoning or start a fire.
• When using propane grills, make sure the tank is in good condition, all connections are tight, and there are no leaks. If you should encounter a propane leak, contact the East Meadow Fire Department at 516-542-0576.
• Place grills at least six feet away from structures, including the house, garage, or shed, and do not use them under eaves, awnings, or overhanging tree branches. Do not use a grill on a porch or balcony.
• Use chimineas, outdoor fireplaces and fire pits outdoors and at least 10 feet away from your home or anything that can catch fire.
• If you want to see fireworks, go to a professional public show. Fireworks are dangerous; sparklers can reach 1,200 degrees F and cause severe burns.
• Keep your pool and deck clear of floats, balls and toys after you leave the pool.
• Adults should stay with children around water, and it is best to always swim with a buddy.
• When boating, always wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved lifejacket.
• Always wear a helmet and bright clothing when bicycling or skateboarding so motorists can see you. It’s also recommended to have reflectors on your bike.
• Always ride with both hands on the handlebars. Bicyclists and skateboarders should always ride in single file with traffic and obey all stop signs and traffic lights.
