Hazmat Team And DEC Rushed To Freeport Marina To Contain Dry Docked Boat Fire: NCFM

FREEPORT, NY — Three boats caught fire while docked on land in Freeport Tuesday night in a blaze that required assistance from Nassau county hazmat and state department of environmental conservation personnel to put out, officials said Wednesday.

According to county fire officials, the fire alarm was raised at 11:49 p.m. at Rick’s Marina on Bedell Street in Freeport, with the Freeport Fire Department responding to the scene. Firefighters arrived to the sight of three boats stored on land actively burning and began fighting the fire with assistance from Baldwin, Hempstead, Merrick and Roosevelt fire departments, officials said.

The 75-person firefighting force was assisted by a county fire marshal hazmat team and the DEC, both of whom had been called to mitigate any potential leaking fuel from the boats, officials said. Over the course of the 45-minute firefighting effort, firefighters had to deploy firefighting foam before the blaze was knocked down with no injuries reported, officials said.

In the wake of the fire, the fire marshal’s office said no significant fuel runoff was found at the scene. The fire marshal’s office and NCPD arson/bomb squad are now investigating to see what caused the fire, officials said.
