10 Garden City Businesses Closed After Fire On Saturday: Fire Marshals

GARDEN CITY, NY — Ten businesses have been closed for the time being after a fire in Garden City on Saturday, fire marshals said.

The Garden City Fire Department received an automatic fire alarm and a phone call at 1 p.m. from a jewelry store on Franklin Avenue that an outlet in the basement was smoking, the Nassau County Fire Marshal's Office said.

The three-story building had smoke in the basement, and the occupants evacuated after an automatic fire alarm notified them, fire marshals said.

Firefighters brought the fire under control within 55 minutes with approximately 75 firefighters on scene, fire marshals said.

No injuries were reported, but 10 businesses were closed after the electric and gas were shut off, according to fire marshals.

Mutual aid was provided by Westbury, Hempstead, New Hyde Park, Mineola, Carle Place, Franklin Square, Uniondale, Floral Park, Garden City Park, Manhasset Lakeville, and West Hempstead fire departments, all under the command of Chief Parrella, fire marshals said.

The Village of Garden City building department was notified, and the fire is currently under investigation by the NCFM and NCPD Arson/Bomb Squad, fire marshals said.
