ALDI To Open New Great Neck Store Ahead Of Schedule

"I am thrilled," Councilwoman Liu said. The ribbon-cutting event is set for Thursday, as the Plaza welcomes the long-awaited supermarket.

GREAT NECK, NY — A new ALDI grocery store is set to open in Great Neck this week, bringing a long-awaited supermarket to the Plaza.

The 21,000-square-foot store, located at 38 Great Neck Road, will officially open on Thursday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

ALDI has been rapidly expanding, with the new store opening marking its 19th location on Long Island. This comes ahead of its originally anticipated summer 2026 debut.

Town of North Hempstead Councilwoman Christine Liu said the effort to bring the supermarket to the area began in 2023 while she was campaigning, when residents repeatedly raised the need for a local grocery option.

"When I spoke to Great Neck residents, I remember very clearly that the number one need of residents was a supermarket in the Plaza," she said. "Somewhere they can get their cereal, bread, and eggs. They wanted it in the Plaza."

After taking office in 2024, Liu said filling the vacant space previously occupied by Best Market was at the top of her list: "That was my first priority for Great Neck."

She worked to identify a grocer that would fit the 20,000- to 25,000-square-foot space and meet residents' demands for a supermarket offering everyday essentials.

Liu said she was very deliberate when selecting grocery options and brought each option to the Village of Great Neck Plaza Board, made up of Mayor Ted Rosen, two deputy mayors, and two trustees.

"It had to fit the footprint," she said. "And people wanted a more non-ethnic supermarket to get the basics."

Over the past two years, there have been challenges. One hurdle involved delivery hours, as Plaza regulations initially limited deliveries to 6 p.m. Liu said ALDI raised concerns because its Connecticut-based warehouse typically operates overnight, making the restriction a potential "dealbreaker."

To talk through the issues at hand, Liu gathered ALDI, the Village of Great Neck Plaza Board (including the mayor), and Kimco Realty (property managers) for a meeting. The group ultimately reached a compromise and found a way to bring ALDI to Great Neck – they decided to allow deliveries until 10 p.m.

"I am thrilled to bring ALDI to the Plaza," Liu said. "It speaks volumes about the Plaza, the building department, and everyone for making this a reality."

There will be a soft opening on Weds., April 22, where folks can shop the store, ALDI's website states.

A grand opening with a ribbon-cutting event will be on Thurs., April 23 at 8:30 a.m. The store will officially open at 9 a.m.

According to ALDI, the first 200 to enter the store will receive a Golden Ticket that could be worth up to $100. Bags filled with "ALDI goodies" will also be given to the first 200 customers. Lastly, ALDI employees will be handing out free ALDI shopping totes in limited quantities. More details can be found on the website.
