A meeting is scheduled on Thursday, August 6th at 6:30 pm at the Lady
of Lourdes School (Gymnasium) to update community residents and to
introduce the legal team for a lawsuit filed last week against the City
of New York over its approval of a development at 1727 Amsterdam Ave.
that would demolish a 60,000-sq-ft health center serving 10,000
low-income, Medicaid, and uninsured patients (37,000 visits last year).
One of the two clinics on-site — Heritage, a federally qualified health
center — would be permanently removed; the other cut to roughly a third
of its space.
Three state legislators — Sen. Cordell Cleare and
Assembly Members Al Taylor and Jordan Wright — have joined community
members as plaintiffs. The suit says the City skipped a full
environmental review and ignored a Community Board 9 plan that would
keep the health center and build more deeply affordable housing (468 →
1,127 residents), aimed at what people in the neighborhood actually
earn.
