TRUE NORTH journeys into 1960s Montreal, tracing a pivotal period of Black resistance through the 1968 Congress of Black Writers and the Sir George Williams Affair. Through archival footage and first-person testimony, filmmaker Michèle Stephenson connects Black struggles in Canada with movements across the Caribbean and the United States, revealing a history of resistance, solidarity, and collective action that crossed borders.
FILMMAKER-TO-FILMMAKER CONVERSATION
Following the screening, Michèle Stephenson joins filmmaker Alain Martin, director of The Forgotten Occupation, for a filmmaker-to-filmmaker conversation about the making of TRUE NORTH. Together, they will discuss the research, relationships, archival work, creative choices, financing, and persistence required to carry an ambitious documentary from its earliest ideas to the screen.
