See 300+ Years Of Suffolk Sheriff History At Huntington Town Hall

HUNTINGTON, NY — An exhibit highlighting more than 300 years of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office’s history is now open at Huntington Town Hall.

The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office History Exhibit features historic photographs, artifacts, uniform items and a timeline chronicling the evolution of the agency and its role in the county.

The Sheriff’s Office traces its roots to 1683 and is Suffolk County’s oldest law enforcement agency, officials said.

"As one of the oldest law enforcement agencies in the nation, we are proud to celebrate our long and rich history," Suffolk County Sheriff Errol D. Toulon Jr. said. "We thank the Town of Huntington and Supervisor Smyth for hosting our showcase and look forward to more exhibits and events with communities across the county."

Huntington Town Supervisor Edmund J. Smyth said the exhibit complements the town’s recognition of the nation’s 250th anniversary.

“The Town of Huntington has truly embraced the celebration of our Country’s 250th Anniversary of Independence. Everywhere you look throughout Town Hall you will find references of our area’s historic past,” Smyth said. “From the colonial Militia that faced the British head on, to the wall of Huntington Law enforcement officers that dedicated their lives to service, we embrace those that have given so much to protect and serve. Huntington extends a special thanks to Sheriff Errol Toulon, Jr, for commissioning and sharing this display for all those that wish to learn and appreciate Suffolk’s oldest law enforcement agency and those that served its call. We welcome this impressive exhibit commemorating the history of Suffolk County Sheriff’s from yesterday and today, and look forward to its service to help secure our tomorrow.”

The exhibit is part of the Sheriff’s Office’s participation in Suffolk 250, a countywide commemoration marking 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The display was previously shown in Riverhead, and the Sheriff’s Office plans to bring exhibits to other Suffolk County communities throughout the remainder of the year.

The Huntington exhibit will remain open through October at Town Hall, 100 Main St. It can be viewed Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Town Hall is closed on holidays.
