Suffolk Police Launch Labor Day DWI, BWI Crackdown

SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — Suffolk County police will increase patrols on roads and waterways over Labor Day weekend as part of a crackdown on impaired driving and boating, officials announced.

The high-visibility patrols will run from Sept. 4 through Sept. 7 and include officers from the Highway Patrol Bureau’s Selective Alcohol Fatality Enforcement Team, or SAFE-T, according to police.

Officers will take a zero-tolerance approach to anyone driving or boating under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Police will also target aggressive driving and seat belt violations.

The department will use funding from the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee Safe Driving Enforcement grant and the Suffolk County Stop-DWI grant for the increased enforcement.

During Labor Day weekend in 2025, Suffolk County police arrested 24 people on driving while intoxicated charges, officials said.

“Labor Day Weekend highlights the end of the summer season for many families, and we do not want a joyous weekend to turn into a tragic one,” Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine said. “If you chose to act irresponsibly, law enforcement will be out in full force and hold you accountable. There is zero tolerance for reckless behavior on our roads. Please use common sense and plan for a way to get home responsibly.”

In addition to traffic and boating enforcement, officers will patrol popular downtown business districts, large public gatherings and what police described as vulnerable entities.

“The Suffolk County Police Department will have a heightened presence on our roadways and waterways throughout the holiday weekend, and we encourage everyone to act responsibly,” Suffolk County Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina said. “In this day and age where a ride is always available at your fingertips, there is no excuse for driving while intoxicated. Do not put your life or anyone else’s life in jeopardy.”
