Mamaroneck Repeats at Top Climate Tier And Is Ranked 5 In New York State

TOWN OF MAMARONECK, NY —The Town of Mamaroneck has again been certified at the Silver level in New York State's Climate Smart Communities program, the highest level in the program, and now ranks fifth among 1,700 communities statewide.

The town announced the recertification Thursday, saying New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Amanda Lefton made the announcement last Tuesday.

New York State's Climate Smart Communities Certification program helps local governments save energy, reduce flood risk, address extreme heat and develop other plans to show climate leadership. Communities earn points by completing and documenting local actions that mitigate and adapt to climate change. The state requires 300 points for Silver certification, and Mamaroneck said it earned 398 points in its most recent submission.

"As New York and other states face more severe weather, costly damage, and health-related impacts due to climate change, our community partners are working collectively to reduce emissions, save costs for consumers, and strive for a cleaner and safer future," Lefton said.

Town Supervisor Jaine Elkind Eney said the designation reflects years of local work on emissions reduction and resilience.

"Achieving Climate Smart Silver certification demonstrates the Town’s continued commitment to taking meaningful steps to address climate change and build a more sustainable community," Elkind Eney said. "This designation also opens the door to additional funding and resources that can help us advance important environmental initiatives and create a stronger, more resilient future for the Town of Mamaroneck.:

The town's climate work has included installing EV charging stations, retrofitting town buildings to reduce energy use, installing LED bulbs in town streetlights, purchasing electric vehicles for municipal use, participating in Community Solar programs, banning gasoline-powered leaf blowers and completing flood mitigation projects. According to the town, many of those actions were funded through grants at no cost to taxpayers.

The recertification keeps Mamaroneck in the state's top tier for climate planning and implementation. The town said the Silver designation can help it pursue additional funding and resources for future environmental initiatives.
