I was at McDonald’s, waiting for the kids to finish their nuggets and burgers, when I looked up at the menu board and saw it: the fried apple pie is back. The one that got discontinued in 1992.
I wasn’t exactly an activist as a young woman, pretty oblivious to most things happening around me, but I still remember calling McDonald’s corporate that Thanksgiving in 1992, asking why on earth they’d discontinue the best pie I’d ever had. The woman on the phone told me the new baked version was “healthier.” Healthier, sure. But not tasty. That fried pie was in a league of its own.
Tonight I finally got my hands on one again. First bite had a slightly funny taste, probably just re-adjusting to the fried oil, but by the second bite my mouth remembered exactly what it was missing. That vanilla-tinged, saturated-fat heaven. I was right back in 1992.
