A Story of Hope

Sharon Richmond Brings Her North Star to Suffolk County Symposium

There are people who show up to events, and then there are people who show up with their whole heart. On Tuesday, May 12, 2026, Sharon Richmond, Vice Chair of the Suffolk County Women’s Advisory Commission, does it all.

Sharon played a key role in organizing the symposium on mental health and substance misuse at the H. Lee Dennison Building in Hauppauge. She opened the program, introduced each panelist with warmth and purpose, and later signed copies of her book for participants. Finding Your North Star, written by Sharon Richmond and illustrated by Maddy Moore, is more than a children’s book. Sharon offers a deeply personal story that serves as a source of encouragement for families, reminding them that hope can be found even in difficult times, drawing from her son’s journey. Proceeds from the book benefit the True North Foundation and Sharon’s scholarship program, continuing her lifelong commitment to giving others a path forward.

After the event, Sharon signed copies for attendees, fostering meaningful connections. She dedicated my copy to my grandchildren with the words: “May you always follow your North Star and let it light your path, with love, hope, and courage.”

Sharon Richmond exemplifies the qualities of an educator and advocate, using her experiences to guide and support others. In a room full of people talking about breaking down barriers and making services accessible, Sharon reminded us that sometimes the most powerful thing we can offer another person is our own story, honestly told, with a happy ending held out like a promise. We are grateful she was in that room.

We are grateful she wrote that book. And we hope many more families across Suffolk County find their way to their North Star. Finding Your North Star by Sharon Richmond is available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Thriftbooks.
