Who needs a phone booth or secret identity when an entire school district is filled with superheroes?

This year’s Red Ribbon Week campaign celebrated superheroes, and Lindenhurst students and teachers embraced the theme with enthusiasm.

Members of the Lindenhurst High School Community Cares Youth Coalition, along with mentors Megan Scharf and Jenn Ketcham, visited Daniel Street Elementary School to share leadership skills and talk with fifth graders about healthy choices, supporting one another, and recognizing their own superpowers.

The high school students also nominated teachers to wear superhero capes, honoring the everyday heroes who inspire students and help them discover their potential.

At Lindenhurst Middle School, Youth Coalition facilitators Melissa Levy and Nancy Paulose led Operation Breakfast Surprise! Middle school students decorated breakfast bags with stickers, encouraging words, and positive messages. Throughout the week, students picking up breakfast received both a nutritious meal and a reminder that they are important, capable, and able to make someone’s day better.

These activities reflect what the Lindenhurst Community Cares Coalition hopes young people will discover:

You don’t need to fly, leap over buildings, or wear a cape to be a superhero. Sometimes all it takes is a kind word, a healthy choice, a helping hand, or the courage to lead by example.

The campaign also showed how leadership can move from one generation to the next: high school students mentoring fifth graders, middle school students encouraging their peers, and teachers being recognized for their daily impact. Prevention is not always a lecture; sometimes it is an experience, a connection, a smile, or a message on a breakfast bag.

Congratulations to our Youth Coalition members, facilitators Megan Scharf, Jenn Ketcham, Melissa Levy, and Nancy Paulose, our superhero teachers, and the schools that embraced this campaign.

The best part of this superhero story?

There isn’t just one hero. There’s an entire community of them.

And their superpower is caring.
