The New York Relays took place last week at Icahn Stadium, the storied track and field arena on Randall’s Island in New York City. For Nassau County athletes, it was an opportunity to showcase their talents on a major stage.
Baldwin Bruin Brandon Thweatt was one of the top performers, winning the 110 meter high hurdles after running a 14.18-second split in the finals and setting a meet record in the prelims, running a 14.03. Thweatt was joined by Gio Duplessy, Tyrell Holder and Jordan Williams in the 4x100 meter relay, where the quartet won the event with a 42.28.

On the girls’ side of the relays, sprinters Savannah Stephenson and Breanne Barnett made the podium across multiple events. Stephenson ran a 12.13 in the 100 meter finals, finishing one-tenth of a second behind Janelia Williams of Paul Robeson High, then followed that effort with a third-place finish in the 200. Finishing second, four-tenths of a second ahead of Stephenson, was her teammate, Barnett. Stephenson ran a 25.05 while Barnett ran 24.64. Also making the finals was freshman Kamdyn Brown, who ran a 28.35 and finished 29th.
At a longer-distance event, Massapequa senior Kyra Florio-Marinello won the 2000 meter steeplechase, running a 7:07:30 time that placed her at the finish line 23 seconds ahead of the competition.
Valley Stream North junior Paige Fessler also showed up at the relays, winning the high jump with a 5-11 mark.
Baldwin Senior Scores 100th Goal
While Baldwin girls’ lacrosse isn’t in a contending spot in the Conference III standings, the Bruins got a win this week: Senior Casey Keryc scored the 100th goal of her career, with district officials congratulating her after the game.
“This remarkable achievement is a testament to Casey's dedication, skill, and hard work on the field,” the district said Thursday.
Slow Pitch Softball Competition Announced In Celebration Of Lindsey Rose Parke
Sports will bring Nassau County together this weekend, as the Parke family of Levittown holds a slow-pitch softball tournament in honor of their daughter, Lindsey, a volunteer firefighter in the Levittown Fire Department who died after a car crash in Hicksville in January.
The tournament will take place Apr. 26 at Eisenhower Park Pavilion and Fields, with proceeds going to charities that support EMT, fire department foundations and baking classes, among more.
There are still limited slots available, and the winning team will receive a free set of jerseys with the MVP receiving a custom ROC softball glove.
