2 Planes Nearly Collide At JFK Airport, FAA Investigating Near-Miss

QUEENS, NY — The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating a near-miss this week after two planes narrowly avoided colliding on Monday afternoon at John F. Kennedy International Airport, officials said.

The incident took place around 2:35 p.m. on April 20 with one plane taking off while the other was landing, FAA officials said.

“The crew of Republic Airways Flight 4464 performed a go-around at John F. Kennedy International Airport after missing the intended approach path and flying too close to Jazz Aviation Flight 554,” FAA officials said, adding that both flight crews responded to onboard alerts.

Jon Austin, a corporate communications representative for Republic Airways told Patch that during the approach into JFK, the crew of AA4464, operated by Republic Airways, received a “resolution advisory.”

“They complied with the advisory and, consistent with our training and procedures, executed a go-around to land without further incident,” Austin said.

FAA officials said the Jazz Aviation Flight 554 was cleared to land on a parallel runway.

“On approach into New York (JFK), Flight 8554 en route from Toronto (YYZ), the flight crew received a traffic warning notification and resolution as well as direction from ATC, and the crew took immediate action,” Air Canada said in a statement Wednesday. “Safety is our top priority, and our crews are well-trained to deal with many operational situations such as this. The flight landed safely at JFK.”

The National Transportation Safety Board and Port Authority NY NJ declined to comment on Wednesday, referring to the FAA investigation of the near-crash.

This incident comes just a month after a Jazz Aviation plane crashed into a fire truck at LaGuardia Airport – pilot Antoine Forest and first officer MacKenzie Gunther died in the crash, reports said.

Republic Airways was not immediately available for comment when Patch reached out.

The FAA is currently investigating the near-miss and stated the information is preliminary and subject to change.
