Drug Takeback Day Returns To Massapequa Saturday, Town Officials Announce

MASSAPEQUA, NY — South shore residents will have the chance to dispose of their medications safely this weekend, as "Shed the Meds" Drug Take Back Day returns to YES Community Counseling Center Saturday, Apr. 25, from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Announced through a partnership between YES, County Legislator James Kennedy and Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, the anonymous program allows residents to dispose of non-liquid, legal medications at designated locations across the county.

For the town supervisor, the initiative isn't only a chance to maintain public health, but to keep Oyster Bay's environment safe.

“This Drug Take Back Day is a great opportunity to rid your medicine cabinet of old and unwanted prescription drugs,”Saladino said. “Through proper disposal of old medications, we can prevent them from contaminating the environment through improper disposal and also keep them out of the wrong hands and away from young people.”

For people who can't make it out to YES Saturday, officials said there will be disposal containers at all police precincts in Nassau County. For those who can make it, there are a few rules to keep in mind:

• Officials have asked people to remove any of their personal information from medicine containers before dropping them off
• Officials said liquid medication and illicit substances are not being accepted, but IV, injectables and syringes will be.
