ATV Operator Tries To Elude Cops On Newburgh Streets: PD

NEWBURGH, NY — An all-terrain vehicle operator is accused of leading police on a chase on local streets - even driving in the wrong direction at one point in an attempt to escape, police said.

Officers first spotted the ATV on Farrington Street Thursday around 8:30 p.m. ATVs are not allowed on city roadways.

When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver drove recklessly, including failing to stop at stop signs and disregarding other traffic safety laws, police said.

Officers at that point activated their emergency lights. The ATV driver then fled, continuing through city streets and Downing Park in an attempt to get away, police said.

The ATV driver drove the wrong way on Johnston Street and finally stopped near 161 Johnston St., where he attempted to leave the ATV and hide in nearby backyards, according to police. Police found and arrested the man shortly afterward.

The driver, Edwardo Moreno Jr., 34, of New Windsor, is charged with reckless driving, unlawful operation of an ATV, and obstructing governmental administration.

The ATV, a 2013 Honda, has been impounded.
