People Mysteriously Emerge From NYC Manhole, NYPD Investigate

MIDTOWN, NY — The New York City Police Department is investigating after a group of people wearing overalls and headlamps was caught on video mysteriously emerging from a Manhattan manhole.

The TikTok video, posted Friday, shows three apparent spelunkers climbing out of a manhole on 32nd Street and Seventh Avenue at 4:19 a.m. Tuesday.

This is the latest in a string of similar manhole incidents. More than a dozen people climbed into Brooklyn's sewer system through manholes at two locations in late May, prompting a police investigation and a multi-agency search of the underground network.

It's unclear if the Brooklyn incidents are connected to the Manhattan incident.

The Department of Environmental Protection said that going into sewers is "both illegal and extremely dangerous."

The department also said that the infrastructure was unharmed in the incident.

"DEP works closely with our public safety partners to help ensure the safety and security of critical infrastructure throughout New York City," the department said.

"Sewers can contain numerous hazards, including noxious and potentially deadly gases, unstable surfaces, flooding risks, and confined spaces," the statement said. "For these reasons, members of the public should never enter a pipe, drain, catch basin, manhole, or outfall."

The NYPD is investigating, and no arrests have been made, police said.
