Suspicious Package Shuts Down NYC Streets Near UN General Assembly

MIDTOWN, NY — A portion of Midtown East was shut down to traffic and pedestrians on Tuesday afternoon after a "suspicious package" was discovered, New York City Police Department officials said.

According to the NYPD, the suspicious item — which was later deemed not harmful — was found near East 43rd Street and Third Avenue at 2:57 p.m., leading to a shutdown of 42nd Street through 44th Street between 2nd Avenue and Lexington Avenue.

Though the package was not dangerous, the closure of 43rd Street between Third Avenue and Lexington Avenue remains in effect as NYPD officers continue the investigation, officials said.

The scare comes as the United Nations General Assembly convenes leaders from around the world nearby at East 46th Street and First Avenue.
