Father Sues Suffolk Police, Alleging Failure To Find Son Who Was Found Dead In Mt. Sinai Woods: Report

He believes they were biased against his son due to his mental illness, Newsday reports.

MT SINAI, NY — A dad has filed a lawsuit against the Suffolk County Police Department, alleging officers violated his son's civil rights when they failed to search for him after he ran into the woods adjacent to his home, only to be found by a deer hunter dead in a Mt. Sinai sump back in October, Newsday reported.

The body of 23-year-old Casey Mendelsohn was found in a Town of Brookhaven sump on Oct. 22, a week after his father, Barry Mendelsohn, reported him missing, and police failed to investigate his disappearance, insinuating he was off somewhere doing drugs, the outlet reported, citing the lawsuit.

"I believe the police failure to investigate is motivated by discriminatory bias against the deceased based on Casey’s mental illness, which police completely knew about," Mendelsohn wrote in the suit, according to the outlet.
