Emma is often considered Jane Austen’s masterpiece, though Pride and Prejudice was more popular in the author’s lifetime—and has remained so. We’ll investigate how Emma represents the peak of Austen’s literary artistry, as well as why many readers over the centuries have found this novel, and its heroine, less appealing than Austen’s other creations. We’ll also weigh the judgment of the late, great British crime novelist P. D. James that Emma merits recognition as the first detective novel in English.
