Mayor Mamdani Fires NYC Sheriff, Appoints Replacement: What To Know

NEW YORK CITY — Mayor Zohran Mamdani has fired NYC Sheriff Anthony Miranda and replaced him with a former NYPD Lieutenant.

Mamdani did not give a reason for firing Miranda. The former sheriff was previously probed by the Department of Investigation for his enforcement of unlicensed smoke shops.

Edwin Raymond will replace Miranda in the position.

“Edwin Raymond represents the kind of public servant New Yorkers deserve: principled, courageous and deeply committed to justice,” Mamdani said in a statement. “Throughout his career, he has fought to build a public safety system rooted in effectiveness, accountability and public trust.”

Raymond was a 15-year veteran of the NYPD, previously serving as commanding officer of Brooklyn North Community Affairs and as a platoon commander in the 81st and 83rd Precincts.

He also had stints at Transit District 32 and the 77th Precinct. Raymond retired from the force in 2023.

Raymond has most recently served as a social justice liaison in the Office of the New York State Attorney General.
