NYC Suspends All Ferry Service As Heavy Ice Chokes East, Hudson Rivers
All NYC ferry routes were suspended due to heavy ice buildup on the East and Hudson rivers, making navigation unsafe for vessels.
BROOKLYN, NY — All New York City ferry services were suspended Tuesday due to heavy ice accumulation on the East and Hudson rivers, officials said, citing unsafe operating conditions and potential risks to passengers and crews.
NYC Ferry announced the systemwide shutdown would remain in effect until further notice as prolonged cold temperatures caused significant ice buildup along major waterways. The ice can obstruct ferry routes, damage hulls and propulsion systems, and limit vessels’ ability to maneuver safely.
While ferry boats are designed to operate in cold weather, thick and shifting ice poses challenges that can quickly escalate, particularly in narrow channels and near docking terminals.

Extended periods of below-freezing temperatures allow ice to form faster than tidal movement and vessel traffic can break it up, officials said. Wind conditions can further push ice floes into ferry paths, increasing the likelihood of mechanical issues or delays during emergency situations.
The suspension affects all NYC Ferry routes across the five boroughs. Riders were urged to seek alternate transportation options, including subways and buses, which continued operating.
