Where To Buy New Mandated Trash Bins In NYC
New sanitation rules require secure-lid bins for trash collection, replacing loose bags as city targets cleaner streets.
NEW YORK, NY— The City will require residents in smaller residential buildings to use official trash bins for curbside collection beginning June 1, a shift that could bring fines for those who fail to comply.
The New York City Department of Sanitation said the rule applies to properties with one to nine residential units, including homeowners, nonprofits, houses of worship and professional offices and residential buildings.
The requirement centers on the city-issued “NYC Bin,” introduced in July 2024 as part of a broader effort to remove black trash bags from sidewalks and reduce rodent activity.

The bins feature secure lids, standardized sizes and compatibility with mechanized collection trucks.
Under existing rules, enforced since January 2025, residents who fail to use a compliant bin, 55 gallons or smaller with a secure lid, face escalating fines: $50 for a first offense, $100 for a second and $200 for subsequent violations.

Officials have not confirmed whether those penalties will change once the official NYC Bin becomes mandatory.
The city offers three bin sizes:
- 45-gallon bin, designed for buildings with multiple units, holds up to four kitchen trash bags and costs $54.60
- 35-gallon bin, suited for single-family homes, holds up to three bags and costs $47.25
- 25-gallon bin, intended for limited space or lower waste output, holds up to two bags and costs $45.19
Officials recommend selecting a size based on building type and trash volume.
Bins for recycling and composting are also available, though only trash bins are required under the new rule.
Residents can purchase the official bins at several Home Depot locations across the city, including sites in Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan.
