The Life & Times of Theodore Cornu

Theodore Cornu (1884-1985) was an artist, canoe builder, and environmental pioneer who inspired Pete Seeger and many others in the early environmental movement—but died in obscurity. He lived for twenty-five years in the Ferry House of the Van Cortlandt Manor. There he built Native American-style canoes—one as long as forty feet—and devoted himself to the conservation of the Hudson River. In 1936 he was one of the founders of the Hudson River Conservation Society. Croton Point Nature Center Assistant Curator Jean Klurfeld will present her research on Cornu’s life and impact, based archival research and newly uncovered information about his life.
