Sunday, April 19th, Join Brooklyn Contra for a barn dance, welcoming new participants into New York's most approachable social dance! Join us for the soulful fiddling of Oliver Scanlon with the creative harmonizing and driving rhythm of Alex Louis Fortier’s piano, along with calling from Carl Levine!
Contra is the perfect social dance to get new dancers started, with a 30-minute free lesson all you need to enjoy the next three hours of dancing.
Contra is an easy-to-learn folk dance (similar to square dancing with some swing dance flair) that comes with a free lesson and amazing live tunes! Originating in northern Appalachia based on English and French formal dances, contra is now danced around the country by multi-generational communities. Bringing a partner isn't necessary as folks switch partners between each dance.
