Black Hawk Helicopter, 'Powerful Tribute Of Sacrifice,' Installed At LI's Lt. Michael Murphy SEAL Museum

Brookhaven Town officials donate $5,000 to museum to support the ongoing mission to preserve the history of the U.S. Navy SEALs.

PATCHOGUE, NY — Local officials gathered recently to celebrate the installation of a Black Hawk helicopter at theLt. Michael Murphy Navy SEAL Museum in West Sayville.

Murphy, a U.S. Navy SEAL and Patchogue native, was killed in 2005 when he and his men were ambushed in Afghanistan. He died trying to call for help while exposing his position to enemy fire. He was posthumously recognized with the Medal of Honor in 2007. In 2012, he was bestowed with the rare honor of having a Navy destroyer named after him — the U.S.S. Michael Murphy.

Brookhaven Town officials called it a" powerful tribute to the courage, sacrifice, and legacy of the men and women who have served the nation."

"It stands as a lasting reminder of the extraordinary service and sacrifice of the nation's heroes,"town officials said.

Supervisor Dan Panico presented the museum with a $5,000 donation to support the ongoing mission to preserve the history of the SEALs through artifacts, immersive exhibits, educational programming, and interactive displays that educate and inspire future generations.

Town officials extended their gratitude to Murphy's father, Daniel, Museum Manager Donna Donahue, and everyone involved in hosting the ceremony, "for their continued commitment to honoring those who have defended our freedoms."

They also recognized "the enduring legacy" of Murphy "and all those who have served in defense of the United States."

"Through partnerships with organizations such as the Lt. Michael Murphy Navy SEAL Museum, Brookhaven remains committed to preserving the stories of courage, sacrifice and patriotism that continue to inspire future generations," officials said.

The museum is located at 50 West Ave., West Sayville.It is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m, and is closed on Mondays.
