Suffolk Police Frequently Checking 'Religious Institutions, Vulnerable Entities' After Incidents In VA, MI

County residents are encouraged to call 911 to report suspicious activity.

YAPHANK, NY — In the wake of the incidents at a synagogue in Michigan and at Old Dominion University in Virginia, the Suffolk County Police Department is continuing to conduct frequent checks at religious institutions and vulnerable entities, its brass said in a statement on Thursday.

The department is "aware of the incidents," and although there are currently no credible threats in the area, it is working with law enforcement partners and monitoring the situation, according to the statement.

County residents are encouraged to call 911 to report suspicious activity.

On Thursday morning in Virginia, a man previously convicted of providing ISIS material support, was identified as the person responsible for the shooting at Old Dominion University, law enforcement officials told NBC News.

The incident is being investigated as terrorism, the outlet reported.

As Patch previously reported, a suspect was shot and killed Thursday afternoon after ramming a vehicle into a West Bloomfield, MI, synagogue, according to Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard.
