Barn Fire Breaks Out In Riverhead: Officials

Firefighters knocked down the blaze in about a half hour, officials say.

RIVERHEAD, NY — Firefighters knocked down a barn fire in Riverhead early Friday, officials said.

According to the Riverhead Fire Department, on Friday morning, a report came in about a structure fire in the 4000 block of Sound Avenue in Riverhead.

Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy smoke and located a barn involved in fire behind the residence, the fire department said.

Firefighters forced entry and quickly began fire suppression operations, bringing the fire under control within about 30 minutes, fire officials said.

Due to the location and water-supply needs, crews deployed nearly 1,000 feet of hose and established a relay operation to maintain a continuous water supply throughout the incident, fire officials said.

The Riverhead Fire Department was assisted by the Jamesport Fire Department, with a rapid intervention team, the Wading River Fire Department, with a tanker and ladder, and the Mattituck Fire Department, with a ladder, officials said.

The Flanders Fire Department provided standby coverage at Riverhead Fire Department headquarters, and the Hampton Bays Fire Department was requested for additional manpower – but was told not to respond while en route after the fire was brought under control, fire officials said.

"We thank all of our mutual aid partners for their assistance and coverage," the Riverhead Fire Department said.

The scene was subsequently turned over to the Riverhead Town fire marshal, officials said.
